The origin of systematic musicology is strongly linked to the studies of music cultures of non-Western origin. From the methodological point of view, folk music research applied systematic methods to collect and analyze data. Expertise in folk music alters the brain processing of Western harmony

In various paradigms of modern neurosciences of music, experts of Western classical music have displayed superior brain architecture when compared with individuals without explicit training in music. In this paper, we show that chord violations embedded in musical cadences were neurally processed in a facilitated manner also by musicians trained in Finnish folk music. This result, obtained by using early right anterior negativity (ERAN) as an index of harmony processing, suggests that tonal processing is advanced in folk musicians by their long-term exposure to both Western and non-Western music.
Economic Impacts of Cultural Events on Local Economies: An Input—Output Analysis of the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival

This paper examines the economic impacts of Finland's Kaustinen Folk Music Festival. The impacts are calculated on output, demand and wages, employment and on national and regional taxes. The results indicate, first, that the effects of the festival on output are about ₠1.7 million. Kaustinen can also be seen as a good investment for the local municipality, as regional tax revenues increased by about ₠65,600 in the year studied, while the annual subsidy was ₠40,365. Particularly the question which parts and elements in folk tunes are sensitive to change and what are the stable elements of the melodies. Researchers had data collected over several decades, which gave a great opportunity to systematically explore stability of melodies over the years and decades.

Listeners are sensitive to pitch distributional information in music (N. Oram & L. L. Cuddy, 1995; C. L. Krumhansl, J. Louhivuori, P.Toiviainen, T. Järvinen, & T. Eerola, 1999). However, it is uncertain whether frequency-based musical features are sufficient to explain the similarity judgments that underlie listeners' classification processes. A similarity rating experiment was designed to determine the effectiveness of these features in predicting listeners' similarity ratings. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan kahden suomalaisen musiikkifestivaalin, Savonlinnan Oopperajuhlien ja Haapavesi Fok Music Festivalin, kohtaamia haasteita 2000-luvulla sekä sitä, miten haasteisiin on reagoitu ja toimintaa sitä kautta kehitetty. Kun festivaalien tarkastelun painopiste on kehittämistoiminnassa ja siihen johtavissa tekijöissä, tarvitaan oppimista sekä oppimiseen ja kehittämiseen suuntautunutta organisaatiota. Tutkielmassa tarkasteltiin, millaisia ovat musiikkifestivaalien järjestäjien käsitykset yleisöistä sekä erilaisista yleisön ja osin yhteiskunnankin odotuksista festivaalia kohtaan: millaiseksi festivaalitoimijat yleisön kokevat, miten erilaisia yleisöjä tavoitellaan ja mitä haastatellut festivaalijärjestäjät ajattelevat festivaalinsa tarjoavan. Kulttuurifestivaaleilla on aiemmin sekä Suomessa että kansainvälisesti toteutettu erilaisia yleisötutkimuksia, mutta tapahtumien järjestäjien näkökulmasta yleisökäsityksiä ja niihin liittyviä toimintatapoja on tutkittu vähemmän.
